Seventh-Ranked LSU Travels To Face Mississippi State In Early Kickoff
LSU, now ranked No. 7 in both the AP and USA Today Coaches Polls, returns to action on Saturday when the Tigers travel to Starkville to face Mississippi State. Kickoff for the contest is scheduled for 11:21 a.m. from Davis Wade Stadium. The game will be televised on the SEC Network. LSU brings a 3-0 overall record and a 1-0 SEC mark into the game. The Tigers are coming off a 31-3 non-conference win over Louisiana-Lafayette last week. LSU is 3-0 for the third straight season. LSU has won 12 straight games played in the month of September dating back to the 2006 season when the Tigers lost at Auburn, 7-3, on Sept. 16. Mississippi State is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play after its 15-3 win over Vanderbilt last week. LSU has won nine straight against Mississippi State, including last year's 34-24 victory in Tiger Stadium. During that 9-game winning streak against the Bulldogs, LSU has outscored Mississippi State, 374-105. LSU has also won four consecutive games in Starkville, including a 45-0 victory on a Thursday night to open the 2007 season. In its last four trips to Starkville, LSU has shutout the Bulldogs twice and limited Mississippi State to a total of 13 points. LSU goes into the State game having gone six straight quarters without allowing a touchdown. The last TD scored against LSU came in the second quarter against Vanderbilt. Since then, the Tiger defense has yielded only a field goal. Through three games, LSU is allowing 11.7 points and 320 yards (129.3 rushing, 190.7 passing) per game. Defense Leads Tigers Past UL-Lafayette, 31-3
Another solid defensive effort combined with a pair of touchdown receptions by Brandon LaFell helped lead LSU to a 31-3 win over Louisiana-Lafayette in Tiger Stadium. The win was the 21st straight non-conference win by the Tigers. LSU got on the board first, going 62 yards on six plays capped with a 16-yard TD pass from Jordan Jefferson to LaFell to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead at the 3:09 mark in the first quarter. After a Chad Jones interception gave the Tigers the ball deep in UL-Lafayette territory, the Tigers needed just one play - an 11-yard run by Trindon Holliday - to stretch the lead to 14-0 at the 14:52 mark of the second quarter. LSU led 17-3 at halftime after Josh Jasper connected on a 52-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter. LSU took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 58 yards on seven plays capped with 20-yard TD pass from Jordan to LaFell to give the Tigers a 21-3 lead. A goal line stand highlighted the defensive effort by LSU in the third quarter as the Tigers turned back the Cajuns on three straight rushing attempts from the 1-yard line. LSU added its final points late in the fourth quarter when Jarrett Lee hit Charles Scott for a 1-yard TD pass. Jefferson finished 16-of-25 for 165 yards and a pair of TDs. Scott led the Tigers rushing attack with 63 yards and LaFell was tops in receiving with six catches for 68 yards and a pair of scores.

LSU plays its second road game of the year on Saturday when the seventh-ranked Tigers travel to Starkville to face Mississippi State. LSU goes into the game with a 3-0 overall mark and a 1-0 SEC record. LSU is coming off a 31-3 win over Louisiana-Lafayette last week. LSU's SEC win came over Vanderbilt in week 2 by a 23-9 count. Mississippi State is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action following last week's 15-3 victory over Vanderbilt.

LSU jumped two spots in the AP Poll this week, going from No. 9 to No. 7 following the win over UL-Lafayette. LSU remained at the No.7 spot in the USA Today Coaches Poll for the second straight week. LSU is one of four SEC teams in the top 10 this week joining No. 1 Florida, No. 3 Alabama and No. 4 Ole Miss.

Chavis' Defense Comes Up Big Again; Tigers Haven't Allowed A TD For Six Quarters
For the second straight week, LSU's defense, under first year coordinator John Chavis, has come up big for the Tigers. Against UL-Lafayette last week, LSU limited the Cajuns to just a field goal and only 272 total yards. The Tiger defense also had a goal line stand in the third quarter, turning back UL-Lafayette on three straight plays from the 1-yard line. A week earlier against Vanderbilt, LSU surrendered just a second quarter touchdown to go with 210 yards of offense (122 rushing, 88 passing). The 88 passing yards were the fewest allowed by LSU in an SEC game since Nov. 24, 2006 when Arkansas managed just 62 yards passing against the Tigers. In addition, the 210 total yards were the fewest allowed by the Tigers in an SEC game since Mississippi State had 146 yards in the 2007 season-opener. It was also the fewest points allowed in an SEC game by the Tigers since the season-opener against Mississippi State in 2007. LSU won that game, 45-0.

Tigers Taking Advantage Of Interceptions
LSU has made the most of its interceptions so far this season as the Tigers have turned three of the four interceptions into points - one being returned for a TD and the other two led to offensive scores. Against Washington, LSU LB Jacob Cutrera returned an interception 29-yards for a first quarter touchdown. Last week against UL-Lafayette, Chad Jones picked off two passes and both of those resulted in TDs by the Tiger offense on their ensuing possession.

Brothers Jones and Alem Sparking Tiger Defense
You don't have to look any further than brothers Chad Jones and Rahim Alem (formerly Al Jones) to see who's been the key to LSU's success on defense this year. Alem is the unquestioned leader of the Tiger defensive front, while Jones is the quarterback in the secondary for the Tigers. Alem, a defensive end, leads the Tigers in both tackles for losses (3.5-17 yards) and sacks (2-12 yards), while Jones, the free safety, is first on the squad in interceptions (2) and he's fifth in total tackles (13).

Miles Goes Into State Game With an 11-5 Record in SEC Road Games
LSU coach Les Miles goes into the Mississippi State game with an 11-5 record in SEC road games. Miles and the Tigers were 2-2 in SEC road games last year. In his first year with the Tigers, Miles won all four of his SEC road games in 2005 followed by a 2-2 record in 2006 and a 3-1 mark in 2007. Of Miles' 11 SEC road wins, five have come against teams ranked in the top 20. Miles is 6-1 in SEC road games against unranked teams.

Miles Is 23-10 In SEC Regular Season Games
LSU coach Les Miles is now 23-10 in SEC regular season games after its win over Vanderbilt in week. 2. Miles was 7-1 in 2005 in conference games followed by a 6-2 record in both 2006 and 2007 and a 3-5 mark a year ago.

Early Start
The 11:21 a.m. kickoff against Mississippi State will be the earliest start time for the Tigers since last year's season-opener against Appalachian State in Tiger Stadium. Last's year game against Appalachian State was moved to 10 a.m. due to Hurricane Gustav. LSU won that game, 41-13. LSU has won its last four games that have started before noon. In addition to its win over Appalachian State, LSU other's victories in the streak include a 34-9 win over Tulane on Sept. 29, 2007 in an 11 a.m. start; a 48-17 win over Mississippi State on Sept. 30, 2006 in an 11:30 a.m. start; and a 51-0 win over Mississippi State on Sept. 25, 2004 in an 11:30 a.m. start. LSU's last loss in a game that started before noon came in 2002 when the Tigers dropped a 35-20 decision to Texas in the Cotton Bowl in a game that kicked off at 10 a.m.

LSU's Best After Dark
Night games in Tiger Stadium seem to bring out the best in LSU. However, lately LSU has been at its best no matter the location just as long as it dark outside. After the win over UL-Lafayette, LSU has now won 26 of its last 27 night games. (Note: NCAA determines that a kickoff at 5 p.m. or later is a night game). Florida snapped LSU's streak of consecutive night wins at 19 on Oct. 11. Prior to the Florida game on Oct. 11, LSU hadn't lost a night game since a 34-14 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game in 2005. Overall, LSU coach Les Miles has guided the Tigers to a 32-3 mark in night games.

LSU brings a 12-game winning streak in games played in September into the Mississippi State contest. LSU hasn't lost a game in September since a 7-3 setback to Auburn on Sept. 16, 2006. Overall, LSU coach Les Miles is 15-2 in September games with the Tigers.

Jefferson Shines In Season-Opener; Off To Fast Start
LSU sophomore QB Jordan Jefferson has performed well in the first three games of the season as he's connected on 47-of-73 passes for 475 yards. He's also added 77 rushing yards. Jefferson completed 31 passes in LSU's first two games, which were the most by an LSU quarterback since Rohan Davey completed 32 passes in the first two games of the 2002 season. Jefferson opened the year by throwing 3 TD passes in the win over Washington and by doing so, he joined JaMarcus Russell (2006 vs. UL-Lafayette), Matt Mauck (2003 vs. UL-Monroe) and Davey (2000 vs. Western Carolina) as the only quarterbacks who have tossed 3 TDs in a season opener for the Tigers in the modern (SEC) era. Jefferson had his streak of passes thrown without an interception snapped at 100 last week against UL-Lafayette. Jefferson, who has a 4-1 record as LSU's starting quarterback, has only thrown one interception in his five career starts.

Jefferson Youngest Starting QB In SEC; Youngest LSU QB To Start Season-Opener Since 1945
LSU's Jordan Jefferson is the youngest starting quarterback in the SEC. Jefferson, who has five career starts to his credit, was 19 years and 11 days old when he took the first snap against Washington. Jefferson was the youngest quarterback to start a season-opener for the Tigers since Y.A. Tittle in 1945. That year, Tittle was 18 years, 11 months and 6 days when LSU opened the season against Rice. LaFell Moving Up The LSU Career Record Books
Senior WR Brandon LaFell continues to make an impact in the LSU career record books. LaFell, who opted to return for his senior season, leads the Tigers in receptions (14) and touchdowns (3). Against UL-Lafayette, he finished with three catches for 57 yards, including two scores. It was the third two-touchdown game of his career. LaFell now stands in a seventh-place tie with Josh Reed (1999-2001) and Ken Kavanaugh Sr. (1937-39) in LSU career receiving touchdowns with 17. LaFell is just two scores from the top three and nine touchdowns away from tying the school record set by Dwayne Bowe (2003-06) with 26. LaFell has also moved into the LSU career receptions top 10. He sits at 132 career catches and is tied for ninth in that category with Tony Moss (1986-89).

Dickson In Position To Break Every Tight End Receiving Record at LSU
Senior TE Richard Dickson came into the 2009 season with a shot at breaking every school record for receiving at his position. For his career, Dickson has caught 75 passes for 835 yards and 10 touchdowns. His 10 TD receptions tie with Brad Boyd for the school's career mark for a tight end, while his 75 catches tie him with Malcolm Scott for No. 2 in school history and his 835 yards is No. 4 in school history. Alem Racks Up The Sacks - Career Total Now at 12
With a pair of sacks in LSU's first three games, DE Rahim Alem has run his career sack total to 12. Alem goes into the Mississippi State contest having recorded a sack in four of LSU's last six games dating back to 2008. A year ago, Alem led the Tigers with 8.0 sacks, which ranked as the ninth-highest total in school history. Alem earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against Vanderbilt.

R.J. Jackson Has Career Night Against Vanderbilt
Senior WR R.J. Jackson produced a career performance against Vanderbilt with 6 catches for 55 yards, including a long of 30 yards that setup a field goal for the Tigers just before halftime. Prior to the Vanderbilt game, Jackson had just one reception for minus-1 yard in his career. Jackson is currently LSU's third-leading receiver thru three games.

Shepard Makes The Most Of His Touches
LSU QB Russell Shepard makes the most of his touches as he's averaging 6.75 yards every time he gets his hand on the football. Shepard, who has lined up at both quarterback and receiver for the Tigers, had rushed for 48 yards on seven carries (6.9 avg) and he's caught one pass for a 6-yard gain. In just a handful of plays, Shepard accounted for 27 rushing yards on three carries and he caught a pass for a 6-yard gain (although he did fumble the ball away after he made the catch). He had a long run of 13 yards and he averaged just over 8 yards for his four touches. Last week vs. ULL, Shepard rushed for 21 yards on four carries.

Two games into the 2009 season and LSU has already had six players make their first career start. Four Tigers started the first game of their career against Washington and then two more followed last week against Vanderbilt. The following is a look at LSU's first-time starters this year:

He Must Be A Former Lineman
One look at LSU's results in relation to rushing the football and it's easy to figure out that head coach Les Miles is a former offensive lineman. In 56 games under Miles, LSU's success is easy to predict when it comes to net rushing yards. Get to 100 yards rushing and LSU will more than likely win as the Tigers are 42-5 under Miles when that happens. Hold the opponent to fewer than 100-yards and the Tigers are 29-3. An even more telling stat is that when LSU rushes for 100-plus yards and holds the opponents to fewer than 100-yards, the Tigers are 28-0. A Unique Situation At Left Tackle - 2 Players Have Accounted For Last 94 Starts
Starting left tackle Ciron Black goes into the Mississippi State game having started 43 straight games, all coming at left tackle. Since the start of the 2002 season, a stretch that spans 95 games, only two players have started at left tackle for the Tigers - Black and Andrew Whitworth. Whitworth, now a starting tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals, set an LSU record by starting 52 straight games for the Tigers from 2002-05. Black then picked up where Whitworth left off, starting the next 42 games at that position for the Tigers. Black's 43 straight starts ranks as the second-longest active streak in college football.

Charles Scott Goes Over 1,000-yard Mark
LSU's Charles Scott topped the 1,000-yard rushing mark in 2008, going for 1,174 yards and 18 touchdowns in what was one of the most productive seasons in school history for a running back. Scott's 1,174 rushing yards is the fifth-highest total in school history, while is 18 rushing TDs ranks No. 2 all-time. Scott goes into 2009 looking to become the first LSU running back since Kevin Faulk to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. Faulk did it three straight years from 1996 to 1998. Only three players in LSU history have had back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons - Charles Alexander (1977-78), Dalton Hilliard (1984-85) and Faulk (1996-97-98).

Two Brothers Start For Tigers On Defense -- Alem and Jones
LSU had two brothers starting on defense against Washington in the season-opener as DE Rahim Alem (formerly Al Jones) and FS Chad Jones both started. It is the first time brothers started in the same game for the Tigers since 2005 when FB Kevin Steltz and S Craig Steltz both started in a win over Appalachian State.

LSU Returns Top Rusher, Receiver And Passer For First Time Since 1997
For the first time since the 1997 season, LSU returns its top three hands on offense in terms of rushing, passing and receiving. This year, Charles Scott returns as the Tigers leading rusher from a year ago, while Brandon LaFell returns as the top receiver from 2008 and quarterback Jarrett Lee comes back after leading the Tigers in passing yards. In 1997, running back Kevin Faulk, quarterback Herb Tyler and wide receiver Larry Foster all returned on offense after leading the Tigers in rushing, receiving and passing from the year before.

LSU Leads Nation With 21 Straight Non-Conference Wins
With its win over UL-Lafayette, LSU has now won 21 straight non-conference games, a streak that dates back to the start of the 2005 season. LSU coach Les Miles is a perfect 21-0 in non-conference games at LSU. The 21-game non-conference winnings streak ranks first nationally. LSU's last non-conference loss came during the 2004 season when Iowa scored on the final play of the game to beat LSU, 30-25, in the Capital One Bowl. LSU hasn't lost a regular season non-conference contest since dropping a 26-8 decision to Virginia Tech in the 2002 season opener.

LSU's streak of consecutive Saturday night wins in Tiger Stadium goes back to the 2002 season when the Tigers beat Ole Miss, 14-13, to get the run started. The last time LSU lost a Saturday night game in Tiger Stadium came against Alabama on Nov. 16, 2002 by a 31-0 count. Les Miles has accounted for 21 of the 32 victories. LSU has dropped a night game in Tiger Stadium since the 2002 season, but it came on a Monday night against Tennessee in 2005. Game 1 Notes vs. Washington
LSU ran just 48 offensive plays in the season-opener against Washington. The 48 offensive plays were the fewest by an LSU team since the 1965 season when the Tigers mustered just 45 snaps in a 23-0 loss to Ole Miss on Oct. 30. LSU, 5-1 and ranked No. 5 in the nation at the time, managed just 52 yards of offense that day against the Rebels.
LSU LB Jacob Cutrera intercepted a pass on his first play (Washington's first play of second drive) and returned it 29 yards for a TD. Cutrera became the first LSU player to return an interception for a TD since CB Jonathan Zenon did it against Tennessee in the 2007 SEC Championship Game. He's the first linebacker to do it since Kenny Hollis scored on a 3-yard interception return against Tennessee in 2005.

LSU senior Rahim Alem was named defensive player of the week in the SEC for his play in the Tigers' 23-9 win over Vanderbilt. Alem recorded a career-best seven tackles, a sack and a pass breakup in the victory.

You can now refer to LSU as D-line U as the Tigers have made it a habit of producing All-Americans and NFL Draft picks from its defensive line. Since the 2003 season, LSU has had five defensive linemen earn a total of six First-Team All-America honors and nine members of its defensive line selected in the NFL Draft. In 2007, DT Glenn Dorsey became the most decorated defensive player in school history - winning four national awards - on his way to becoming the fifth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. In the spring of 2009, Defensive end Tyson Jackson became the highest LSU defender ever picked in the NFL Draft, going No. 3 overall to Kansas City. An Offseason of National Championships for Chad Jones and Trindon Holliday
Free safety Chad Jones and running back/return specialist Trindon Holliday became national champions during the football off-season. Jones was an outfielder and key relief pitcher for LSU’s 2009 College World Series champion baseball team. Jones maintained a 2.70 ERA in 6.2 innings pitched while walking three and striking out seven. He tossed three innings and did not allow a run or a hit in three appearances at the College World Series, which earned him the nickname “Dreadlocks of Doom”. Jones came on in relief of starter Anthony Ranaudo in the deciding Game 3 of the CWS Championship Series against Texas and was brilliant. He did not allow a run in 1.2 innings of work while walking none and striking out two. Prior to spring football practice, Jones played in the outfield and batted .343 (12-for-35) with a homer, six RBI and eight runs scored. Along with former WR Jared Mitchell, Jones and he became just the second and third athletes in school history to win national titles in multiple team sports. Both were members of the 2007 BCS national championship team. Holliday, meanwhile, became the 100-meter dash national champion at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Holliday clocked 10.00 in the national final of the 100-meter to claim the title. The time was the fastest of any player in the history of college football.
