I'd love to see us get a campaign going to get LSU license plates here in NC. I can't find information on how many we would need, but I think Texas needed 1,900, but I read that it's only 300 applicants here. Purdue, Florida and South Carolina all have plates here, so it isn't unheard of here. We could partner with the Charlotte chapter as well.
Also, I look forward to meeting everyone at the crawfish boil. Where/how do I sign up?

Ok, I did some research and this is what I found out (thanks to Adam Morris of the local Penn State Alumni Chapter, he sent me this information):

Here is what I know about getting a specialized license plate, specifically and officially a "collegiate insignia license plate," in North Carolina:
-The contact person for specialty plates in NC is Kay Hatcher and her number is 919-861-3575.
-The NC DMV, with whom you will be working, requires 300 PAID applications before they will post your plate for sale on their site. Your job is to solicit 300 PAID applications before you hand your proposed artwork with colors & color code numbers to the DMV.
- The artwork has specific guidelines which it needs to fit, you can ask Kay about them, she is excellent about offering help and knowledge.
-The plates are now designed and imprinted digitally, as opposed to before, when they were silk screened. This allows for more latitude when designing your plate, and as I understand it, allows for a broader palette of colors.
Finally, the big thing to remember, is that due to the DMV not printing your plate or putting it on their website until there are 300 PAID applications, you are in a catch 22 of sorts - you want people to pay for it, but they won't review it until there are 300 paid applicants. So essentially, you need to convince 300 LSU alumni to make a blind leap of faith and pay you $25 each for a regular plate and $55 each for a personalized plate. The NC DMV will add the $33/$28 regular registration fee to each individual's annual bill once the plates get fired up and running.

I'll make a few phone calls this week and see if I can confirm that this is still an accurate representation of the process and then see if we can get the process started for LSU plates.
