Achieving a goal

Whenever LSU runs its first play from the I-formation against North Carolina on Saturday night, one Tigers player will reach a personal goal. Four years ago, a senior center at Baker High School had the desire of playing football at LSU. However, there was one problem. James Stampley was a 5-foot-10, 220-pound offensive lineman. An individual with that height and weight doesn't get the chance to perform in the Southeastern Conference.

The top ranked quarterback in the state of Texas J.W. Walsh was on fire in Denton Guyers opening game last Saturday against Waxahachie, in the Old Coach Avery Air Classic. Walsh engineered four 1st half TD drives, en route to a 45-7 victory. Walsh finished the day 15-20 for 340 yards, and 4 TD passes. Deangelo Peterson won't make trip

With his ability to stretch the field, tight end Deangelo Peterson was expected to be a key ingredient in LSU's passing game. However, the Tigers will be without Peterson for the first few games, including Saturday's season-opener against North Carolina in the Georgia Dome. LSU coach Les Miles confirmed at his post-practice press conference Wednesday evening that Peterson has a foot injury.

The right side of LSU's offensive line will have a different look in the season-opener against North Carolina on Saturday night in the Georgia Dome. Neither right guard Will Blackwell nor right tackle Alex Hurst has started a college football game. Each individual participated in more than a dozen plays only once last year - 32 plays for Blackwell against Georgia and 20 plays for Hurst against Penn State.

The paths of D.J. Welter of Crowley and Luke Muncie of Klein, Texas crossed for the first time in the summer of 2008 during LSU's elite prospects camp. They immediately found themselves working together at different linebacker positions - Welter better suited to play in the middle - while Muncie was able to use his quickness to play more on the outside.

Three freshmen slated to start on defense

Three freshmen are set to start on a Tigers defense which will feature seven new starters. Redshirt freshman Sam Montgomery is the listed starter at right end. Redshirt freshman Lamin Barrow is the projected starter at weakside linebacker with Ryan Baker unavailable due to a broken jaw.

Undoubtedly, Josh Jasper did his job better than anyone else on LSU's 2009 football team. Jasper connected on 17 of his 20 field goal attempts with two of the misses coming against Auburn when he was hindered by a hip injury. He was 34-of-34 on extra points.
